I didn’t wait but rolled as fast as I could. Bullets slammed into the decking and railing where I’d been. Sparks flew up, bits of metal exploding. I felt lots of impacts, stings from metal cutting me, small burns from the sparks. Didn’t stop me. I just kept rolling.

And rolling.

I heard the suppressed fire, a couple of shots, coming from multiple locations. My fireteam.

The attack on me stopped.

I was breathing heavy, not wanting to push myself up quite yet.

The guy had been moving fast, tracking me. He was pretty close to getting me. I looked to the side, seeing the destruction that was the metal decking. Dents, penetrations, burn marks, scratches across the surface. And they all ended only six inches or so from me.

It had been close.

“You good, Zag?” Lowdown asked.

“Yeah,” I replied, pushing myself up. I turned away from the destroyed decking, taking my weapon in hand and heading for the doors. “Good to go.”
